Baking Up a Storm

Another good day is almost ended.  I called my sister and spent fifteen minutes just talking about nothing, just visiting and that was before I got out of bed and before I even turned on the light.  I slept great last night, I went to bed about 10 pm and slept soundly until almost 4am.   That is the longest I have slept in one stretch for a long time.  Then of course I could not get back to sleep but I stayed in bed with my eyes shut.  Then about quarter of 5 I heard a post come into my phone.  Usually I don’t have my phone in my room but last night I had to plug it in so it was on the night table by my bed.  I paid no attention to it but still could not get to sleep so about 5:30 I thought that must be my sister awake in Florida and looked and sure enough it was Shirley saying good morning so I went to face time and called her.  We had a wonderful visit before I even got up.

Then I started my day.  I email a good morning to Rosemary – I can’t start my day without saying Hello to her and I can’t go to bed without reading her note to me.  If I don’t hear from her I know she is really busy so I wait until the next day to find out what happened.  I am so lucky to have two such wonderful relatives, at this age I guess I am lucky to have two relatives my age and then to be so close to them is just unbelievable.

Holly had to go into work early again today and she has a meeting this afternoon so may not be home for a while tonight .  I know she loves her job but she would have to in order to work such hours.  There are not many women who have such a great daughter-in-law.  I am glad my son found her,

When Luke woke up and had his breakfast we got started on his school work.  He works with me as if he likes it and I hope that is true.  We have not started a project yet.  I have been waiting for my supplies to get here and they did this afternoon so tomorrow we will start a History project and a phonics project.  Today I gave him some home work to work on in the afternoon and every time I saw him I asked him one of the questions I gave him to learn and every time he knew the answers so he must be working on them.

Then I started cooking.  I made banana bread for Landen.  That is his favorite and we had 5 ripe bananas so I use three of them.  If no one eats the other two I will get some more when we go shopping and I’ll make another loaf and freeze it so if we don’t get bananas one week he will have the banana bread anyways.  We had lunch very late today.  No one was hungry until about 2:30 and after everyone had lunch I made chocolate chip cookies with my gluten free flour and they came out great.  I had wanted some chocolate candy so when I ordered my school supplies I included a bag of chocolate bites and of course when they came today I had to have one, then a second one and when I finished the cookies I had to have one of those and then when I was all done and ready to sit down I had to have another butter finger bit and that did it.  All that chocolate went through me like spring peas through a goose.  Now I am fine and sure I didn’t gain any weight with that candy and I won’t eat more than one little bit a day from now on.

Shirley,  you know what happened with all that cooking – yes, my back began to hurt and by the time I took out the last batch of cookies my back was really hurting and I remembered what you do when your back hurts and I also thought about the electric blanket you sent to me so I sat down with the blanket behind my back and you are right.  It took the pain away in just a few minutes.  I did get up to put supper in the oven and in the warmers.  We are having baked ham, baked potatoes , green beans and cauliflower and now am back to my chair and feeling great.  I will use this blanket a lot I am sure.  With a soft mattress so I have no leg or hip pains and the hot blanket to keep the pain out of my back I can take on the whole day with no worry.

Joe comes back tonight.  He was going to try to get out about 3 so he could get here for supper at 6 but I really don’t look for him until later so we will keep a supper warm for him to have whenever he gets in.  Have a great day and be nice t yourself.

About Carol (Ouma) Petts

I am a retired teacher. I have taught all levels from kindergarten through college and have been retired now for over 20 years. The last ten years we have lived on a farm and lived off the land, growing our own food and canning for our extended family. Now we have sold the farm and are moving to Florida to truly retire. I guess I have always had a short attention span as this is our 11th move. We have moved from a small farm in New Hampshire, to more city type living, small business adventures, focusing more on traveling, Florida living, Georgia, and Tennessee farming and now back to Florida. My blog is a way to keep my children up to date on what I am doing and letting them know I am still alive and well. My children are spread across the country from New England to Florida, Nova Scotia to New Mexico and CA and several places between, They let me know what they are up to by commenting on my blog but they are so busy with their own lives most times I have to assume " no news is good news". Now I are starting on a new adventure so will try to give daily updates until we get settled into a routine. Then I know even if I am getting older and should settle down I will start looking for some new and exciting adventure to start. Welcome aboard. Norman died Oct 30, 2017 so I am continuing the journey alone with the aid of my children, grand children and great grand children. At present I am living with my daughter and we are 7 in one house and cover four generations. We range in age from 7 to 85 and are finding common ground, we are living proof that multi generations can live and function in a three bedroom house if they really want to. Soon my grandson will have his house built next door so we all will have a room of their own except for the seven year old twins who by choice will share a room.
