Peter Rabbit

This morning several of my interests/hobbies all came together in one very special minute and I wanted to share it with you. (1) For the two years we have been retired here I have loved crocheting animals to go with my children’s story books.  I gave most of them to the Learning Center down the street but I did save my Betrice Porter books and the animals to go with those.  My favorite story is of Peter Rabbit and how he got caught in Mr McGregor’s garden. (2) My blueberries are growing well and sending out new shoots.  Most of them have more than doubled in size so seems to like their new home.  To keep them happy I water them every morning before the sun is up and shining on them, blueberries like plenty of water and well drained soil.  So a good watering is done every morning about 6:30 if it did not rain the day before.  Right now we are in a drought right here, it rains each day to the south of us in the morning and to the west of us in the afternoon but never here. (3) I was carrying the water from the outside picket   to the bushes because it was so much work to hitch up that heavy hose and try to drag it around so Norman bought me a new hose.  He got me one of those light weight hoses you see advertised on the TV.  Neither of us really had any hope it would be as good as they say but he wanted to try it and see if it would make the watering easier for me as I would not let him do the watering.  Well, that hose is just perfect for me.  It is light weight so I can just pull it wherever I want and it shrinks up small enough to just fit into a small pail.  I can leave it hooked up, put it into the pail and tip that upside down which keeps it out of the sun.  If I left it out the sun would kill it in just a few months.  The sun here is unbelievable and nothing can take that all day.  It also drains when I turn it off, all by itself and pulls itself into a small pile near the tap.  This morning I went out to water my bushes and when I went to the three bushes on the side of the house I usually see a full grown rabbit on the lawn but today she was not there.  I wondered if the owl got her.  We have an owl that keeps the rabbit population down so thought nothing more of it but when I watered the rose bush in the corner I saw something run out of the tangle of the rose bush and run along the house behind the blueberries.  It was too small to be the adult rabbit that is usually around but too big to be a mouse or the lizard that usually runs out of there when I water.  So I turn the hose off and slowly turned to see what it was.  I was careful because I thought it could be a rat.  And there sitting very still, looking scared to death was a very tiny baby rabbit.  The cutest thing you ever saw.  I remembered back in Blairsville, Ga where we had a very large garden and we had rabbits there also.  I always watched them carefully to be sure they didn’t get into the garden and they never seemed to, they ate in the lawn.  Until one day the mother rabbit came and left one baby rabbit in the garden..  After that I would see him run ahead of me when ever I went in to weed or to pick vegetables for dinner.  He never ran out of the garden, just hid behind the plants and stayed just out of my reach.  He didn’t eat much so I never drove him off until the garden was done in the fall.  By then he was full grown and left on his own.  This one today must have come the same way.  We had a mother cat that would do that with here kittens if we didn’t find homes for them when she thought it was time for them to go.  The neighbors as far away as 2 miles would find a kitten on their front steps and it did no good to bring them back to us as the mother would take them back again.  So I know  that mothers do that when the baby can feed itself.  I watched little Peter for a little while and thought of the story of Briar Rabbit when he got caught by Briar Fox and he tried to talk his way out of getting eaten.  He said “do to me what ever you want but PLEASE don’t throw me into that briar patch”  Of course the the fax did, only to find that was the rabbits home.  So I watched as I turn on the water again and sure enough, the rabbit jumped and ran as if I had thrown him back into the rose briars and I could not see him no matter how I looked.  That is the favorite home for rabbits as the briars on the roses cleans their coat as the run through them and other predators can’t get in.

I finished watering and came in to make up the fruit dishes for breakfast.  As you see it doesn’t take much to make my day and that little bunny has made this a wonderful day.  Now it is time to get back to the Star Wars figures I am crocheting.  I am making four sets and there are 24 different ones in all.

This is the one I am working on now.  This is C-3PO.  He should be more of a gold color but this was the best I could do.  I need to make three more and I will try a brown belt on the next one.

This is hard to see but when I finish them I put them on the table by the window and the light makes it hard to see the dolls.  These are the three kinds I have done already.  The fourth one I did was the Storm Troopers.  Joe told me I should have more that one of those for each set so I make four.

These are the 16 Storm Troopers I just finished the last one of those yesterday. Now onward and upward. I have 20 more to get done before Christmas.  I thought I was all done with the afghans but find I have three more of those to do before Christmas too so best get at it.  Have a great day.

About Carol (Ouma) Petts

I am a retired teacher. I have taught all levels from kindergarten through college and have been retired now for over 20 years. The last ten years we have lived on a farm and lived off the land, growing our own food and canning for our extended family. Now we have sold the farm and are moving to Florida to truly retire. I guess I have always had a short attention span as this is our 11th move. We have moved from a small farm in New Hampshire, to more city type living, small business adventures, focusing more on traveling, Florida living, Georgia, and Tennessee farming and now back to Florida. My blog is a way to keep my children up to date on what I am doing and letting them know I am still alive and well. My children are spread across the country from New England to Florida, Nova Scotia to New Mexico and CA and several places between, They let me know what they are up to by commenting on my blog but they are so busy with their own lives most times I have to assume " no news is good news". Now I are starting on a new adventure so will try to give daily updates until we get settled into a routine. Then I know even if I am getting older and should settle down I will start looking for some new and exciting adventure to start. Welcome aboard. Norman died Oct 30, 2017 so I am continuing the journey alone with the aid of my children, grand children and great grand children. At present I am living with my daughter and we are 7 in one house and cover four generations. We range in age from 7 to 85 and are finding common ground, we are living proof that multi generations can live and function in a three bedroom house if they really want to. Soon my grandson will have his house built next door so we all will have a room of their own except for the seven year old twins who by choice will share a room.
