Florida Breakfast

I find I complain a lot more here than I did in Spencer, TN and it is always about the heat.  Well that is my own fault, I knew it was hot here long before I moved here so I will stop complaining about it and tell you about the wonderful things here and I will start with breakfast.  Never before have we been able to have such a wonderful breakfast.  We always have started off with some fruit and it was fresh fruit if it was in season, otherwise it was canned or frozen.  Now look at our fruit!!Photo on 6-30-16 at 6.09 AM

This is Norman’s dish.  He has a orange or grapefruit cut into 5 pieces, I get the sixth one as I don’t like the citrus as much as he does.  Then there are three slices of Sweet GA mellon, 4 cherries (thanks to Shanti)  a slice of pine apple, a baby banana and a small bunch of grapes.  Shanti gave me for my birthday a membership in Harry and David’s fruit of the month.  So every month we get a box of some different fruit and this month it is cherries.  Every month they are the best of which ever fruit it is.  Thank you Shanti.  We always have a piece of citrus and this time it is CA oranges, the grapes come from South or Central America. The melons come from all over, which ever area has them ripening at that time and I love those baby bananas.  All we have to do is go down to Nelson Farm stand or to Save-A-Lot and get all the fresh fruit for less than we could grow it.  I have never seen such wonderful fruit!! Photo on 6-30-16 at 6.09 AM #2

This is my dish of fruit..  We have that every morning. Then we follow the fruit with a small bowl of steel cut oat meal with honey and raisins.  The honey is from Nelson’s farm, using local honey it helps with any allergies, it is best to use local honey when ever you can.  We have always had the dried fruit, blueberries for the eyes, cranberries of the urinary track, and cherries for the joints and leg pains with a few walnuts thrown in for the Omega 3 fatty acid but now Norman has his as his afternoon snack and I have them with my supper as I am trying not to eat at all in-between meals.  We have such a well balanced diet with all the vegetables at noon I find I am not hungry inbetween meals.  I do have a teaspoon of Bragg Apple cider vinegar in a glass of water twice a day to keep my system from being too acidic and that is keeping my colitis under control .  I also gave up gluten and chocolate and go very light on any dairy.  No ice cream, or milk and very little butter and cheese so all my old complaints seem to have cleared up and I feel better than I every have since I can remember.  Norman still has his whole wheat bread and his ice cream since he has no digestive problems like I did.  I don’t want the ice cream when he has it and I never did like whole wheat bread so Jack Sprat and his wife still lick the plater clean and get along just great.  It should be no surprise to any one since we never have agreed on anything.  He is a republican and I am a democrat, he likes dark bread I liked white, he likes brown rice, I like white, he likes vanilla ice cream I always wanted chocolate and so on and so on.  No matter what the topic is he is on one side and I am on the other but we have lived together for 65+ years now and have been very happy.  I wish the country could find a way to live in peace also- Take note Donald Trump!!  Have a great day.

About Carol (Ouma) Petts

I am a retired teacher. I have taught all levels from kindergarten through college and have been retired now for over 20 years. The last ten years we have lived on a farm and lived off the land, growing our own food and canning for our extended family. Now we have sold the farm and are moving to Florida to truly retire. I guess I have always had a short attention span as this is our 11th move. We have moved from a small farm in New Hampshire, to more city type living, small business adventures, focusing more on traveling, Florida living, Georgia, and Tennessee farming and now back to Florida. My blog is a way to keep my children up to date on what I am doing and letting them know I am still alive and well. My children are spread across the country from New England to Florida, Nova Scotia to New Mexico and CA and several places between, They let me know what they are up to by commenting on my blog but they are so busy with their own lives most times I have to assume " no news is good news". Now I are starting on a new adventure so will try to give daily updates until we get settled into a routine. Then I know even if I am getting older and should settle down I will start looking for some new and exciting adventure to start. Welcome aboard. Norman died Oct 30, 2017 so I am continuing the journey alone with the aid of my children, grand children and great grand children. At present I am living with my daughter and we are 7 in one house and cover four generations. We range in age from 7 to 85 and are finding common ground, we are living proof that multi generations can live and function in a three bedroom house if they really want to. Soon my grandson will have his house built next door so we all will have a room of their own except for the seven year old twins who by choice will share a room.

I am chuckling reading how different you and Norman are, but I think the marriage is a solid one! I am still learning about this business and time is getting short to unravel it all.
We have had it hot and humid here too. It really does bother me and I sit in front of a fan every chance I get. Find it difficult to walk in this weather and don’t want to get up early to walk before it gets too hot. In my younger years that was my answer but…….no dog to get me up and moving now.
We are staying off the roads this holiday weekend. Traffic is too heavy for us. I have a couple of good books waiting to entertain me. You have your animals!!! So let’s put our feet up and enjoy!!!!
Have a pleasant 4th of July weekend!
    Love you, Nancy

    • You don’t know hot until you spend a summer in Florida!! This morning at 6 am it was 75 degrees and as soon as the sun hit the out door thermometer it was 87. Even in the shade by noon it will be in the 90’s and it reaches it’s peak about 4 in the after noon. Right now there is no breeze and the humidity is unreal. I guess you get used to it because there are many people that work outside in this heat. Becca, who has been here since third grade always froze to death when she came to Spencer for a weeks vacation. She wore a sweater all the time and complained that it was cold, couldn’t wait to get back home. We always complained in NH about the heat in the summer but we never got the humidity like you get here. When you get out of your nice air conditioned car on these days, your glasses fog all up and you can’t see!! You can really believe in global warming on these days.
We are staying home this 4th. We heard a few fire works last night but didn’t see any. We used to get more than that the whole month of July in TN, they really celebrate the month of july with fire works and guns. Not here!! Time for breakfast. will write more later. Love Carol

All that fruit looks just wonderful! I don’t know about that Republican voter though! Just kidding!
    Rosemary

    • Hi Rosemary, We are lucky to have a farmer’s market so close. As to the Republican, Norman has been a Republican all his life. We usually cancel each others vote but some years we make a deal – I’ll vote for your governor if you will vote for my president. This year there is no Republican running so Norman will vote with me – he says Donald Trump is not a Republican so he has no one to vote for so he will make a deal with me.

I am glad that Norman is back on my “good” list. I am not from your country but I just cannot believe all the foolishness Mr. Trump proclaims! It is not any of my business but it makes news!

    • I know, can you believe that any one in their right mind could believe or follow a person like Donald Trump. I can’t call him Mr as that denotes respect and I don’t have any for him and never did!! Norman is sure Trump won’t get the votes and even if he did, Norman thinks he would not serve cause he doesn’t want to work and being president is a lot of work.
