A little cooler today and cloudy all day but still a beautiful day for working in the garden. I worked on my genealogy when Norman went for a walk, I finished the Carver Line but that one does not go very far. I got them back to Germany but only five generations starting with Grace so Rosemary, if you go any farther let me know, O.K? Then I started the Bliss line, this one goes back 21 generations. I am putting the lines on a chart so we can see at a glance how far back I have been able to trace the families.
After breakfast we went out to work on the gardens. Norman tilled the kitchen garden. It used to be small but each year it get just a little longer and now is 23 feet long and three triple rows wide. While he was tilling I finished up the grapes and go the lower board back in place to hold the soil when it rains hard. I also had to pull some of that soil back up into the garden to cover some of the roots that had risen to the top. After break Norman was ready to plant. He had three raised rows ready to plant with two broad isles between. Norman planted some lettuce while I did a little plot of Swiss Chard, a small plot of turnips and 2 pounds of onion set then a small plot of carrots and radishes together. That was all in top row. This kitchen garden is just for eating fresh. We don’t plant enough of any one thing to can mostly. The onions I put in very close together as they are for green onions, the ones I want to grow large I put down in the large garden. Norm planted the whole middle row in spinach, three rows wide. Then as it grows I thin and we have our first two meal of spinach with the small plants I thin out. Then I went into the grove and started cleaning out the flower gardens. The last row which is the widest Norman planted three rows of beets but he ran out of beet seed so he finished it off with more spinach. Norman finished up putting things away and cleaning up the yard while I took the afternoon off. I am glad to report my left leg and hip has not hurt at all today. I am careful the way I walk but I do think the bending and streaching that is needed to weed and plant has really fixed my leg. Who would have thought that would happen? Now you know why I just forget about it when things go wrong, they usually work themselves out if I don’t stress about it. Tomorrow it is calling for rain so I will bake and get that done for the week end when Joe and Family are coming again to help finish cleaning up the grove and burn the brush. They are a God sent. They make an impossible job manageable. Have a great day.
