Another Month Behind Us

Here we are, end of November already!!  The days go faster and faster each year but I guess that has always been.   That is why  the elderly know you should never put off until tomorrow to do something you can do today because tomorrow may never come or if it does a whole month has pasted before it get there.

After a great Thanksgiving most of us had a sick Friday.  At first it was thought it was something we ate, I didn’t.  I thought it was how much I ate.  I am not used to stuffing myself because I have been trying to lose weight but I ate everything in sight on Thanksgiving and thought I would just cut way back after to get my weight back down at least to where it was in Wednesday.  Norman did not get the bug so I do believe it was just a bug.  It was a GI bug and lasted only 24 hours so though it was not fun it did what I would have to have worked a week to get done.   After one day of not feeling like eating, just drinking to keep hydrated  I found by Saturday I had not gained an ounce.  So the old saying “It’s an ill wind that blows no good.” proved itself again  If I had to be sick it sure was a short one and came at a perfect time.  Now I am back to normal and ready to eat again but within reason now.

Today we all meet at Patty’s house.  I made a turkey with rice casserole for all those who can eat rice.  Patty doesn’t eat rice or flour in any form so I did a casserole with brussel spouts and pork in a white sauce made with chicken broth and thickened with corn starch and cheese.  I am sure everyone will try some of that too as they all like brussel spouts.

Yesterday we went into Save-A-Lot just to check it out.  We do shop a lot at Save-A-Lot at home because that is the only store in Spencer and their prices are good and they are always a nice clean store.  But we had not been in this one and it is just down the street from our house here.  We have been to all the old standbys and near died with with price of food here.  Of course in Spender we bought very little food as we grew most of it, here we buy it all except for a few things we brought down canned and that is never as good as fresh.  Anyways, at Save-A-Lot the prices blew us away.  Pineapples were $3.50 each and at Save-A-Lot I got one for $1.69 so I got one even if that is not what we went in for.  All of their prices were lower but not as much difference as that one, but sure low enough to do more of my shopping there.  You do have to bring your own bags as they never put things in bags and there is not the great big variety as in Publics but they have all the things we use and the store was nice a clean and friendly.  I will still go to Nelson’s farm stand to get my bulk vegetables and BJ’s for my bulk meat but Save-A-Lot will get most of my weekly shopping.

Time to get to Patty’s.  Shanti, I hope you are having a wonderful time and knowing you I am sure you are.  I wish I could travel as you do but I like being in my own bed at the end of the day and think I am just too old to change now.  Love to all  Ouma

About Carol (Ouma) Petts

I am a retired teacher. I have taught all levels from kindergarten through college and have been retired now for over 20 years. The last ten years we have lived on a farm and lived off the land, growing our own food and canning for our extended family. Now we have sold the farm and are moving to Florida to truly retire. I guess I have always had a short attention span as this is our 11th move. We have moved from a small farm in New Hampshire, to more city type living, small business adventures, focusing more on traveling, Florida living, Georgia, and Tennessee farming and now back to Florida. My blog is a way to keep my children up to date on what I am doing and letting them know I am still alive and well. My children are spread across the country from New England to Florida, Nova Scotia to New Mexico and CA and several places between, They let me know what they are up to by commenting on my blog but they are so busy with their own lives most times I have to assume " no news is good news". Now I are starting on a new adventure so will try to give daily updates until we get settled into a routine. Then I know even if I am getting older and should settle down I will start looking for some new and exciting adventure to start. Welcome aboard. Norman died Oct 30, 2017 so I am continuing the journey alone with the aid of my children, grand children and great grand children. At present I am living with my daughter and we are 7 in one house and cover four generations. We range in age from 7 to 85 and are finding common ground, we are living proof that multi generations can live and function in a three bedroom house if they really want to. Soon my grandson will have his house built next door so we all will have a room of their own except for the seven year old twins who by choice will share a room.
