Apple Juice

Two o’clock and I finally got to sit down.  Norman and Shanti are taking a short nap but if I go to sleep I will never wake up so I will keep quiet and rest for a while.  Norman and Shanti went for a walk this morning and I sewed on Dhyana’s never dress.  Then right after breakfast we went to the cellar kitchen and started in on the apples.  Shanti and I washed the apples, while Norman got the press out and cleaned up.  Then while he was setting that up we cut the apples in half and cored them.  I saved the cores to put with the skins from the pie apples to make jelly with.  Norman used La Machine and grated enough apples to fill the press.  It didn’t make as much juice as we had hoped.  We got Ginger Gold and the gal had said they were the juiciest one they had but boy they weren’t very juicy and there was so much pulp left that I could not see throwing that out so I made apple sauce out of the pulp.  that came out good.  Norman decided the blade he was using was not small enough so her changed blades and grated the next batch   This time he got more juice and less pulp than before but it still looked too good to throw away so Shanti and I made four batches of apple sauce.  Now I must go down and get it into the cans.  I’ll tell you how much we get after.  Have a good day.

About Carol (Ouma) Petts

I am a retired teacher. I have taught all levels from kindergarten through college and have been retired now for over 20 years. The last ten years we have lived on a farm and lived off the land, growing our own food and canning for our extended family. Now we have sold the farm and are moving to Florida to truly retire. I guess I have always had a short attention span as this is our 11th move. We have moved from a small farm in New Hampshire, to more city type living, small business adventures, focusing more on traveling, Florida living, Georgia, and Tennessee farming and now back to Florida. My blog is a way to keep my children up to date on what I am doing and letting them know I am still alive and well. My children are spread across the country from New England to Florida, Nova Scotia to New Mexico and CA and several places between, They let me know what they are up to by commenting on my blog but they are so busy with their own lives most times I have to assume " no news is good news". Now I are starting on a new adventure so will try to give daily updates until we get settled into a routine. Then I know even if I am getting older and should settle down I will start looking for some new and exciting adventure to start. Welcome aboard. Norman died Oct 30, 2017 so I am continuing the journey alone with the aid of my children, grand children and great grand children. At present I am living with my daughter and we are 7 in one house and cover four generations. We range in age from 7 to 85 and are finding common ground, we are living proof that multi generations can live and function in a three bedroom house if they really want to. Soon my grandson will have his house built next door so we all will have a room of their own except for the seven year old twins who by choice will share a room.

Carol…..enough about the apples. I want to hear about Shanti and her life now. She has one son if I recall. Where does he live and what is he doing now? Married? Will look forward to your update.
    Thanks and love, Nancy

    • Hi Nancy, We have had a wonderful visit with Shanti. We have worked her to death but have enjoyed talking as we all worked. Yesterday we canned 11 quarts of apple juice and 4 quarts of apple sauce and today we did 6 pints of apple jelly so that has kept us busy. Look at my blog today and you can see Shanti’s two grand daughters. Yes, she has one boy who is married. She has just gotten her PhD and just gave birth to her second daughter. Shanti still works but has gone part time which gives her more time with her two grand daughters who live in a home at Shanti’s house – very close but different houses. He is a computer programer and his wife will be a college prof come next fall. Nice to talk with you. Love Carol
