No Rest Today!!

Usually we do no extra work on Sundays.  I write to the family and Norman cleans house- he does a much better job of that than I do so we learned that years ago and he took over that job when he retired.  But today we had so many things on the Honey Do List we had to work today also.  Things are ripening up fast now and it is important that we get things frozen or canned as soon as they are ready.  We had the potatoes that we had dug this last week to brush off and put away for storage, I don’t like to wash them so when they dry I brush them off with a soft shoe polishing brush then put them into potato boxes that hold a bushel each.  Today I got one box almost full for good sized Yukon Gold potatoes.  We have 5 long rows left to dig so needed to do two more rows today- those are now spread out on the cellar floor so they can dry and Tuesday we will can another 7 quarts and brush the larger one off and put into storage.  I had one more shorts set to finish for Dyhana so I could get that box packed and sealed so we can take that to the post office tomorrow morning.(ten miles away)  By pushing hard I got all the outfits into one large box and we will get that off tomorrow and hope it get to NM in time for the shower.  Shanti, I hope the dresses don’t get too messed up for you.  The only thing I am afraid of being really messed up is the big sun hat for the new baby.  I had to fold it and just hope it opens up and stands up when you take it out.  There is a snap on the front to hold the brim up out of her face.

Then we did the regular Sunday chores and checked out the rest of the gardens.  The green beans will need to be canned this week  and tomorrow we need to pick zucchini and Swiss chard for dinner.  The cucumbers are getting almost big enough to start eating, the blueberries are getting blue so we can have some of those for breakfast tomorrow and the raspberries are getting ripe so we will need to pick some of those this week and make jelly. Now all I have to do is decide which thing needs to be done first- but not tonight I’m too tired to plan that much.  Have a good night.

About Carol (Ouma) Petts

I am a retired teacher. I have taught all levels from kindergarten through college and have been retired now for over 20 years. The last ten years we have lived on a farm and lived off the land, growing our own food and canning for our extended family. Now we have sold the farm and are moving to Florida to truly retire. I guess I have always had a short attention span as this is our 11th move. We have moved from a small farm in New Hampshire, to more city type living, small business adventures, focusing more on traveling, Florida living, Georgia, and Tennessee farming and now back to Florida. My blog is a way to keep my children up to date on what I am doing and letting them know I am still alive and well. My children are spread across the country from New England to Florida, Nova Scotia to New Mexico and CA and several places between, They let me know what they are up to by commenting on my blog but they are so busy with their own lives most times I have to assume " no news is good news". Now I are starting on a new adventure so will try to give daily updates until we get settled into a routine. Then I know even if I am getting older and should settle down I will start looking for some new and exciting adventure to start. Welcome aboard. Norman died Oct 30, 2017 so I am continuing the journey alone with the aid of my children, grand children and great grand children. At present I am living with my daughter and we are 7 in one house and cover four generations. We range in age from 7 to 85 and are finding common ground, we are living proof that multi generations can live and function in a three bedroom house if they really want to. Soon my grandson will have his house built next door so we all will have a room of their own except for the seven year old twins who by choice will share a room.
