No new foot prints in the garden today so either the mint-X worked or who ever was eating my beans found a more tempting garden to eat on. Before breakfast I did some sewing and after breakfast we both went to work cleaning up the Hickory Grove. There are 5 or 6 small flower gardens out there and one rather large one. The one large one is right next to the blueberries and asparagus. Usually I clean those up as soon as we get home but this year I got going on the vegetable gardens and trying to keep those weeded took all my time and I never got into the grove to pull out the leaves and weeds and the Sassafras has just taken over. Sassafras trees grow from lateral roots so grow where ever the sun peeks in-between the trees. There isn’t much sun in the grove now but in the early spring there is. So we spent all morning cleaning up that large garden. Norman took the pick and dug out old roots and stumps so he could drive the mower through there as I weeded and pulled out leaves. Then Norman got new logs to put around the garden as the old ones had rotted away, most had been in for 6 or 7 years so it was time to be replaced. I also dead headed the iris so they look better, the daffodil plants are still there getting strength for their roots but they are almost gone. The flowers of course are long gone. There are some coral bells, and hydrangea in there also but they are not blooming this year because of the winter kill but the plants survived. The same is true of the azalea through out the grove. I worked until I could not see out of my glasses. When I get over heated I sweat so much my glasses get all fogged up and wet so I just have to quit and shower, anyways it was time to start dinner. I had to pick snow peas and Swiss chard for our new vegetable today to go along with the left overs from yesterday and Thursday. We never throw anything away, if you don’t eat it today you get it again tomorrow so I make sure it is something that we like before I cook it.
Next month we will have company come so we want the grounds all cleaned up and looking nice. I wish I had a crystal ball so I knew what things would be ready to eat in the garden, then I could plan my meals. Oh well, that is a long way off in garden time and unless I tend to work we won’t get anything. Have a great day. Sending love you way.
