Another big canning day-

It promised rain this morning so we could not go for the last load of manure.   Instead I went to the garden and picked a basketful of green tomatoes and all the tomatoes I could find that were ripe and some that were just starting to ripen.  Then it started to rain and we had quite a storm, not too much rain but plenty when we didn’t need anymore right now.  I got 15 pounds of green tomatoes that I put together with 16 onions, 15 apples and 15 banana peppers and right after breakfast Norman ran the La Machine and chopped them all up.  I drained out some of the juice as it was too wet for relish, then I added the vinegar and spices and made 11 quarts of Hamberg and Hot dog Relish.  I used the juice I strained out and added some sugar and spices and made a quart and a half of vegetable juice to use for breakfasts.  Then I fixed the red tomatoes and got 2 and a half quarts of tomato sauce which I sealed and will save to put with the zuchinni later to can those.  And I got a quart of tomato juice for breakfasts also.  I took five of the best green tomatoes and fried up some green fried tomatoes for dinner.  All in all it was a good days work and we were done by 2 o’clock.  This is the last tomato sauce I will try to make.  There are some more green tomatoes in the garden and I will use them for green fried tomatoes as they ripen off a little but there are not enough to try and can as there are not enough to ripen at a time to make the work worth it.   We will pull most of the plants this week but I don’t think I will make anymore relish as I have enough for the family done now.   The weather looks as if it will be nice this week.  A cold front has gone through and it is sunny and cool behind it so we will spend this week cleaning out the garden and getting the soil ready to plant the onions and garlic for next year.  I am still hoping the brussel spouts produce something before we leave but only time will tell.  The Swiss Chard had one or two meals more left and the green beans will still have beans for a couple more weeks so we will still eat off the gardens for a while, then the zuchinni should be producing on the new plants.  We are still eating our own potatoes and butternut squash so it has been a good year.  Have a great day.

About Carol (Ouma) Petts

I am a retired teacher. I have taught all levels from kindergarten through college and have been retired now for over 20 years. The last ten years we have lived on a farm and lived off the land, growing our own food and canning for our extended family. Now we have sold the farm and are moving to Florida to truly retire. I guess I have always had a short attention span as this is our 11th move. We have moved from a small farm in New Hampshire, to more city type living, small business adventures, focusing more on traveling, Florida living, Georgia, and Tennessee farming and now back to Florida. My blog is a way to keep my children up to date on what I am doing and letting them know I am still alive and well. My children are spread across the country from New England to Florida, Nova Scotia to New Mexico and CA and several places between, They let me know what they are up to by commenting on my blog but they are so busy with their own lives most times I have to assume " no news is good news". Now I are starting on a new adventure so will try to give daily updates until we get settled into a routine. Then I know even if I am getting older and should settle down I will start looking for some new and exciting adventure to start. Welcome aboard. Norman died Oct 30, 2017 so I am continuing the journey alone with the aid of my children, grand children and great grand children. At present I am living with my daughter and we are 7 in one house and cover four generations. We range in age from 7 to 85 and are finding common ground, we are living proof that multi generations can live and function in a three bedroom house if they really want to. Soon my grandson will have his house built next door so we all will have a room of their own except for the seven year old twins who by choice will share a room.
