Busy Day with Tomatoes

Yesterday was another busy day canning tomatoes.  We started first thing in the morning, before breakfast I picked an tomatoes that were ripe in our garden.  If you remember I messed up the planting this year by not letting my husband put on the lime which the soil needed so we lost most of our tomatoes to blossom end rot.  But he added calcium to the plants and soil and now we are getting a few.  I got about ten pound, adding that to the thirty pounds we had gotten at the farmer’s market we had quite a few to do yesterday.  We started canning them at 8:30, right after breakfast and put the last load of tomato juice on to process at 4:30 in the afternoon.  We do get a little break once we start processing the jars as each batch of 7 quarts takes about an hour to do before you can open the pressure canner and reload it.  So we got dinner and a chance to sit and rest in the afternoon.  We turned all the tomatoes into Maranara Spaghetti Sauce, we had gotten 12 quarts on Wed. and got 15 quarts yesterday.  Plus we got 2 quarts of tomato juice Wed. and processed 6 quarts  yesterday.  We got 2 other quarts yesterday which we will not bother to process but will drink fresh as our breakfast juice.  That now gives us 30 quarts of sauce and we need at least 36 quarts for us, 12 quarts for our daughter, 24 quarts for our grand daughter and 6 quarts for our grand son grand total of 78 quarts.  Have a few more to go, don’t we.  Hope the farmers at the market can get us lots of tomatoes all this month and next.   Three 20-25 boxes are about all we can take care of each week as we go into the market only on Weds.   Saturday we need to go for another truck load of manure.  Mr Riggsby gives us all we want but he no longer boards horses so when this last pile is gone that will be the end of it and there are only about two more loads left which we will get and pile up here to use when we put the gardens to bed for the winter.  Then I think our soil will be built up enough we won’t need any more manure anyways.  We can just use 10-10-10 and super rainbow which is a 13-13-13 and just not enlarge the gardens any more.  We have all we can handle now so that is good.  Time for breakfast so must run and start the day.  Yesterday I did not get the diary on because by night when I got to the computer my old dial up  worked so slow I could not get my blog done before I fell asleep so will try to get it on earlier today.  Have a great day.

About Carol (Ouma) Petts

I am a retired teacher. I have taught all levels from kindergarten through college and have been retired now for over 20 years. The last ten years we have lived on a farm and lived off the land, growing our own food and canning for our extended family. Now we have sold the farm and are moving to Florida to truly retire. I guess I have always had a short attention span as this is our 11th move. We have moved from a small farm in New Hampshire, to more city type living, small business adventures, focusing more on traveling, Florida living, Georgia, and Tennessee farming and now back to Florida. My blog is a way to keep my children up to date on what I am doing and letting them know I am still alive and well. My children are spread across the country from New England to Florida, Nova Scotia to New Mexico and CA and several places between, They let me know what they are up to by commenting on my blog but they are so busy with their own lives most times I have to assume " no news is good news". Now I are starting on a new adventure so will try to give daily updates until we get settled into a routine. Then I know even if I am getting older and should settle down I will start looking for some new and exciting adventure to start. Welcome aboard. Norman died Oct 30, 2017 so I am continuing the journey alone with the aid of my children, grand children and great grand children. At present I am living with my daughter and we are 7 in one house and cover four generations. We range in age from 7 to 85 and are finding common ground, we are living proof that multi generations can live and function in a three bedroom house if they really want to. Soon my grandson will have his house built next door so we all will have a room of their own except for the seven year old twins who by choice will share a room.
