Had a great day yesterday at the farmer’s market.  My lady that grows so much broccoli was there and waiting for me.  She sells her broccoli for $1.00 for a small head and $1.50 for a large head and those are hugh!!  She asked if I was ready to freeze some and of course I told her yes  so her husband said I could have it for 2 heads for a dollar I said I wanted $5.00 worth and he started bagging it.  It took three plastic bags to hold it all.  I asked what I owed and he said it was really $6.00 but I could have it for 5, I handed him $6.00 and he reached down and took one more large one and put it on top of one bag.  When I got home I found there were 17 heads in the three bags.  All were perfect and fresh so right after dinner I trimmed and peeled to short stocks and cut them up into small spears for freezing.  I blanched and cooled and packed into quart bags and got 19 1/2 quarts of broccoli.  I froze 18 bags and saved 1 1/2 out for dinner today.  I am making a rice, chicken and broccoli casserole that will make 3 meals.  Each of the packages in the freezer will go two meals as I always have 2 or 3 vegetables at each meal so the quarts go for one meal and then left overs for the next meal.  I guess that is all the broccoli I will need or have room for in my freezer.  I don’t have any more room for beet greens in the freezer so we will have to have beet greens three or four times a week just to eat all we still have in the garden.  Last night we got a good rain so everything will be growing fast today when the sun comes out.  Right now it is a little foggy from last night’s rain.  I beat all the farmers to green beans this year because we didn’t have the last two frosts here on the mountain that they got down in the valley at McMinnville.  I just had to leave and feed the cat.  We don’t own a cat but there is a wild one that comes here 3 or 4 times a day to eat the dry food we put out for him.  He stays when we go out but you can’t get anywhere near him he is so wild but he loves the dry food we give him.  We can’t leave it out at night because the raccoons find it and then they bother our gardens so when cat shows up he pushes his nose against the screen and lets us know he is ready for his food.  I don’t know where he eats when we are in Florida but he never looks under fed.  Time to get to work  Have a great day.

About Carol (Ouma) Petts

I am a retired teacher. I have taught all levels from kindergarten through college and have been retired now for over 20 years. The last ten years we have lived on a farm and lived off the land, growing our own food and canning for our extended family. Now we have sold the farm and are moving to Florida to truly retire. I guess I have always had a short attention span as this is our 11th move. We have moved from a small farm in New Hampshire, to more city type living, small business adventures, focusing more on traveling, Florida living, Georgia, and Tennessee farming and now back to Florida. My blog is a way to keep my children up to date on what I am doing and letting them know I am still alive and well. My children are spread across the country from New England to Florida, Nova Scotia to New Mexico and CA and several places between, They let me know what they are up to by commenting on my blog but they are so busy with their own lives most times I have to assume " no news is good news". Now I are starting on a new adventure so will try to give daily updates until we get settled into a routine. Then I know even if I am getting older and should settle down I will start looking for some new and exciting adventure to start. Welcome aboard. Norman died Oct 30, 2017 so I am continuing the journey alone with the aid of my children, grand children and great grand children. At present I am living with my daughter and we are 7 in one house and cover four generations. We range in age from 7 to 85 and are finding common ground, we are living proof that multi generations can live and function in a three bedroom house if they really want to. Soon my grandson will have his house built next door so we all will have a room of their own except for the seven year old twins who by choice will share a room.
