Nothing has changed here.  Yesterday afternoon it was 85 in the shade, then it clouded in and got all dark and we could hear the thunder come toward us.  The the wind picked up and it really blew for about half an hour, the temperture drop 15 degrees.  Then it got light, the thunder stopped and the sun came out.  Not one drop of rain but at least there was no wind damage.  This morning it was cooler, 66 degrees so I was out at 6:15 again to finish the weeding.  When I tried to weed the rest of the beans I found the potatoes we wilting and turning yellow so I dug the rest of the potatoes.  I got 12 pounds of good sized potatoes and 5 1/2 pounds of the little pig potatoes.  I think that is a great yield for the small space we gave them.  Then I finished weeding in that area and picked enough beans for dinner this noon.  They were so fresh and nice.  I tied up a couple tomatoes that had gotten blown over with the wind yesterday and Norman came down with the mantis (tiller) and took the weeds out of the tomato rows.  Now I can finish weeding the tomatoes and prune off all the suckers.  They look so good!! I did some of that today but will finish it tomorrow as it is getting hot now.  Still no relief in sight.  Something is getting my strawberries.  I didn’t have many this year but I was getting half a dozen each day for breakfast but something is stealing them just as they get red.  If I catch the rat I’ll take care of him.  When we go into McMinnville this week we will stop and get some Neem oil to spray all the plants.  It is the best thing to stop the bugs without using a poison.  Neem oil interferes with their reproduction so the gets rid of the future generations which is the best way to get rid of them for good.  We wanted to get it before but it was so expensive because you have to buy such a large amount at the feed and seed store ( a gallon)  and when you use only a teaspoon full at a time it would last forever.  I tried to find it on line and could but it cost more for the shipping than for the oil and it would cost as much for a pint with the shipping as the gallon in town would cost so we will have Neem oil on hand for the next few years.   Have a great day.  If you read this let me know so I can see who is out there.  Thanks

About Carol (Ouma) Petts

I am a retired teacher. I have taught all levels from kindergarten through college and have been retired now for over 20 years. The last ten years we have lived on a farm and lived off the land, growing our own food and canning for our extended family. Now we have sold the farm and are moving to Florida to truly retire. I guess I have always had a short attention span as this is our 11th move. We have moved from a small farm in New Hampshire, to more city type living, small business adventures, focusing more on traveling, Florida living, Georgia, and Tennessee farming and now back to Florida. My blog is a way to keep my children up to date on what I am doing and letting them know I am still alive and well. My children are spread across the country from New England to Florida, Nova Scotia to New Mexico and CA and several places between, They let me know what they are up to by commenting on my blog but they are so busy with their own lives most times I have to assume " no news is good news". Now I are starting on a new adventure so will try to give daily updates until we get settled into a routine. Then I know even if I am getting older and should settle down I will start looking for some new and exciting adventure to start. Welcome aboard. Norman died Oct 30, 2017 so I am continuing the journey alone with the aid of my children, grand children and great grand children. At present I am living with my daughter and we are 7 in one house and cover four generations. We range in age from 7 to 85 and are finding common ground, we are living proof that multi generations can live and function in a three bedroom house if they really want to. Soon my grandson will have his house built next door so we all will have a room of their own except for the seven year old twins who by choice will share a room.
